A strong somewhat easterly pressure gradient lies over the region especially overnight tonight and during the early horus with an unusually strong high pressure ridge to the south with maximum central Mean Sea Level Pressure(MSLP) as high as 1040 hPa!
Wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h possible early today over the hills and foothills.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology(BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds effective early today. Please see the latest warning at http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDW21037.shtml.
According to the BOM easterly winds of this strength occur once every 2-3 years. This eastery wind event could possibly be the strongest since the event on December 31 2015-January 1 2016 or even stronger.ECMWF model predicts winds in excess of 85 km/h at the top of the mixing layer.
As vertical mixing decreases in the next few hours, winds over the coastal plain possibly weaken but gusty winds will still likely penetrate at times, winds remain strong over the hills and foothills.
Some high clouds also overnight and tomorrow streaming in a subtropical jet stream aloft.
Some middle level clouds from Monday to Thursday with moist air aloft.
The west coast trough then moves inland with a cold front, low pressure system and thereafter cold air mass possibly affecting the region from Thursday bringing showers.
