Explanatory notes:

Today, the possibility of showers and thunderstorms from afternoon with an unstable atmosphere with steep vertical lapse rates ahead of an upper level disturbance. Most likely surface based in the afternoon with solar heating, most likely inland of the sea breeze front, then elevated showers and thunderstorms possible thereafter as the upper level disturbance interacts with the moisture lifted by the earlier surface convection. This elevated convective activity continues until early on Tuesday with a rainband and some showers also developing to the north, extending into the metropolitan area. Also the possibility of gusts in excess of 70 km/h over the hills and foothills tonightand early on Tuesday with a the tight pressure gradient and katabatic effect.

Thunderstorm chances ease by Tuesday morning with vertical lapse rates becoming less steep due to cooler air moving in from the southeast in the lower levels and also cooling of the lower levels by the rain. Showers continue ahead of the upper level disturbance with plenty of clouds with moist low level air.

Fine conditions from Tuesday evening as the upper level disturbance moves to the east with fine conditions continuing through the end of the forecast period with subtropical high pressure to the south.
